Galvanized or Galvalume?

Feb 22, 2023

Galvanized and Galvalume are two types of steel products that have been coated with a layer of protective material to prevent rust and corrosion.

Galvanized steel is a type of steel that has been coated with a layer of zinc to protect it from rust and corrosion. The process of galvanizing involves immersing the steel in a bath of molten zinc, which bonds to the surface of the steel, creating a protective layer. Galvanized is a popular choice for exterior materials, thanks to its many benefits, including:

  1. Corrosion resistance: The zinc coating on galvanized steel provides a barrier against corrosion, making it highly resistant to rust and other forms of degradation. This is especially important for exteriors that are exposed to the elements, such as rain, wind, and sun.
  2. Durability: Galvanized steel is highly durable and long-lasting, with a typical lifespan of up to 50 years or more. This makes it an excellent choice for exterior materials, as it can provide many years of reliable protection for a building.

3. Low maintenance: Galvanized steel is relatively low-maintenance, requiring only      periodic inspections and cleaning to maintain its appearance and functionality.        This can save building owners and maintenance personnel time and money in          the long run.

4. Fire resistance: Galvanized steel is highly resistant to fire, making it a safer                choice for exterior materials. It can help to prevent the spread of flames in the          event of a fire, which can reduce damage and potentially save lives.

5. Energy efficiency: Galvanized steel can help to reduce energy costs by           reflecting sunlight and reducing heat transfer into a building. This can help to           keep a building cooler in the summer and reduce the need for air conditioning.

Galvalume steel is a similar product, but is coated with a combination of zinc and aluminum, which provides enhanced protection against corrosion. The aluminum in the coating helps to improve the adhesion of the zinc layer, while also providing additional protection against scratches and other forms of damage. It shares many of the same benefits as galvanized steel, while also adding a few additional draws:

  1. Corrosion resistance: The combination of aluminum and zinc coating in Galvalume provides better resistance to corrosion than galvanized steel, making it an ideal choice for projects that are exposed to harsh environmental conditions such as rain, snow, and high humidity. It will last you longer than anything else we offer!

  2. Durability: Galvalume is highly durable and can withstand extreme weather conditions much better than normal galvanized steel, including heavy rains, high winds, and hailstorms. Its long lifespan makes it an excellent choice for exterior materials.

  3. Lightweight: Galvalume is relatively lightweight, which reduces the structural load on the building. This can make it easier and less expensive to install, and can reduce the risk of structural damage.

  4. Aesthetically pleasing: Galvalume can be produced in a variety of colors and finishes, most commonly with a Kynar coating, making it a popular choice for architects and designers who want to create a unique and attractive look for the building.
